Preschoolers Benefit from Mental Health Screening
Description:
An FPG Snapshot-January 2008 When parents and teachers have concerns about a child's attention, behavior, language and emotions, it is critical to identify mental health difficulties early with a simple screening tool. An assessment that is quick and easy to use is ABLE. "ABLE provides a way to guage the severity of these concerns that helps programs to decide whether the concerns merit additional attention and follow--up." Coatney: Mental health is the springboard of thinking, communication skills, learning, emotional growth, resilience, and self esteem. Recognizing mental health needs is a jumping-off point for school readiness and possibly the most important work that can be done to prepare children for learning. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/opre/hsrc/proceedings/symposia/mental_hlth_200.html |

By courses I mean non-credit educational experiences. Responsive Discipline is sequentially structured and closest to the traditional organization of a course. A Course on Helping is the longest course (equivalent to a small book) and is structured as an informal conversation (as are I'm Positive and FireWorks Anger Management in Adult-Child Relationships. Caringworks and Grandletters are more participatory and less formal (and could have been placed in the Programs section. |
